The saga continues… technicians moving back and forth from being a solo artist to an employee. As a salon owner this can be very difficult. Training a person, helping them build their book, being a confidant and friend possibly for years and then one day they decide they are leaving….
The reason many employees leave an employee setting is because they think they are going to make more money. Well, I’m here to tell you that in most cases it’s not true. There are situations where a solo is a rockstar business-person, but in most cases, they’ll be back or they will leave the industry completely.
What can we do to stop the cycle? This isn’t about crushing goals. If someone wants to be a true beauty boss and they are willing to put in the work, than more power to them! But I’m here to tell you that being a great business-person is a must if you’re going to do it on your own! It’s happening right now in many of our salon clients. Those technicians that left to do their own thing a couple/few years back are now back to the salon to be an employee. AND it’s because they have a big tax bill to pay – they need the predictable paycheck to make those payments!
Be ready salon owner if they come back! If they fit your culture, consider letting them back in. We all think the grass is greener sometimes and have to make our way back to our roots.
